About LVGH

Our Mission and History
Our mission is to improve the ability of Greater Hartford adults to read, write, and speak English. Founded in 1972, Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford (LVGH) trains volunteers to provide English literacy instruction to over 600 Hartford area adults per year. One third of our students are native English speakers who read at below the sixth grade level, and the remaining two thirds are English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students. LVGH is a private non-profit corporation and accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide.

Our Classes
LVGH offers small group instruction. Our classes consist of four to six students per tutor. Instruction is student-centered and follows standard curricula.

In the Community
The Hartford Literacy Center is located at 30 Arbor Street in Hartford on the first floor of the South building. An adjacent lot offers ample parking for both students and volunteers. Classes are also offered at the Wickham Library at 656 Burnside Avenue in East Hartford and at the Wintonbury Branch of the Bloomfield Library at 1015 Blue Hills Avenue.

Volunteering
The hard work and commitment of our volunteer tutors are essential to our program. Each new tutor must participate in an extensive training course. Tutors then commit to teaching one two-hour class each week for one year.

Volunteer computer lab tutors assist students in the Computer Lab, providing instruction in basic computer literacy, including our educational software. Computer lab tutors commit to working in the Lab at least one hour per week.

Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford is governed by a volunteer board of directors who oversee the organization by making strategic and policy decisions regarding the agency.
