National External Diploma Program (NEDP)

Taking the GED test is not for everyone.  The National External Diploma Program (NEDP) is a high school diploma program for adults who acquired their academic skill through life and work experiences and can demonstrate what they’ve learned.  The NEDP measures academic and life skills including reading and critical thinking, written and oral communication, mathematics and problem solving, and other areas.  Completion takes an average of six months to one year, and is different for everyone.

Through the NEDP, adults are asked to demonstrate skills in practical ways.  For example, adults might be asked to read a newspaper or lease, write a letter to a member of Congress or landlord, or measure for carpeting or compute interest on a charge card.  The NEDP is different from high school or a GED because it is self-paced and confidential, conducted in one-to-one appointments with trained assessors, and performance-based (not test-based).  It offers flexible scheduling and allows adults to choose their instructional resources.

The NEDP is issued by your town/city’s Board of Education and is accepted by most colleges, employers, and military services as a high school diploma equivalent.  Colleges may require adults to meet other admissions standards or take certain remedial course work.

Hartford residents may ask LVGH staff, or contact CREC at  (860)247-2732 for more information about the NEDP program.

West Hartford Adult Education is now able to offer the National External Diploma Program and guidance to residents of West Hartford as well as Bloomfield, Avon, Canton, Burlington, Farmington, Harwinton, Newington and Simsbury.  Ask us for more information, or reach West Hartford Continuing Education at (860)561-6900 or www.whlifelearn.org for details!
