About Volunteering
The volunteer options at LVGH offer something for everyone, and our staff is here to help match you with the right position.
You can work directly with speakers of other languages in our ESOL program or you can provide Basic Literacy instruction to native English-speakers who have to overcome many challenges in order to learn English. If computers are your thing, become a computer lab assistant and assist students with our educational software and with basic computer skills. If those positions don’t fit your needs, consider lending your talents to special project committees like communications, fundraising, and special events (see volunteer position descriptions).
To become a volunteer, please complete our online volunteer application.
Still not sure? Contact our Assistant Director, Stephanie Schenkel at (860) 233-3853, Ext. 11 or stephanie.schenkel@lvgh.org.
Training
Our student body is unique. Our Tutor Training Workshop provides specific training on how to teach low literate adults. It helps prepare you to develop lesson plans, locate appropriate educational resources, and to feel confident in the classroom. Three training workshops are offered each year (see tutor training schedule).
All volunteers participate in the tutor training workshop. The training includes:
- a welcome meeting with LVGH staff
- an online training component
- two classroom observations (must be completed before enrolling in the training)
- a volunteer orientation
- participation in a three-session workshop
- two student teaching sessions
