Volunteer Positions
If you are interested in one of the following volunteer positions, please complete our online volunteer application, and an LVGH staff member will follow up with you within 1 week.
Tutor
Teach small groups (4 – 6 students) in English for Speakers of Other Languages, Basic Literacy, or an elective course (options may include Math, Grammar, Writing, U.S. Citizenship).
Participate in tutor training workshop and complete 2 classroom observations and 2 student teaching sessions. Training workshops are held three times throughout the year (Fall, Winter, Spring) at our Hartford Literacy Center.
Time commitment is 2 hours per week (1 class session) for at least one year. Placements are available during morning, afternoon or evening hours.
Computer Lab Volunteer
Work one-on-one or in small groups with students on our educational software.
Assist students with basic computer skills, including web-browsing and navigation, and/or with applying for jobs online, developing resumes, and other topics based on student needs and volunteer ability.
Complete volunteer orientation and training.
Time commitment is at least 1 – 2 hours per week for at least one term.
Fundraising & Development Volunteer
Lend your people skills and fundraising talents to our Gala Task Force, helping to identify and reach out to potential sponsors and silent auction donors for our annual fundraising Gala, which raises nearly $50,000 for our literacy programs each year (fall through spring). Other fundraising-related volunteer opportunities may include helping to identify new annual fund donors, researching grant opportunities, and more. Special Projects Volunteer
Opportunities vary depending on the time of year and our particular needs at any given time. We can’t guarantee that a special project will be available for every interested volunteer, but please let us know if you’re interested and we can let you know what may be possible. The time commitment for this role will depend on the project.
Examples of Special Projects:
- Help publish our annual student newsletter (spring only)
- Assist with mailings, filing, copying and other administrative tasks
- Create video content about LVGH for social media, outreach and fundraising efforts.
Volunteer Opportunities for Groups
LVGH has hosted many corporate and community groups for short-term or day-long projects. These opportunities vary depending on our needs and the time of year.
