Hitting Our Stride

August 9, 2017 By

The first decade of the new century found LVGH in a strong, stable place – the perfect time to reflect on the past and strategize for the future. After years of operating as many as 12 community sites at a time, LVGH streamlined operations to just three community sites in Hartford, Bloomfield, and East Hartford. This resulted in improved coordination and evaluation of services, a greater variety of programming, and a strengthened sense of community.

Student Stories:

“I didn’t realize how helpful LVGH would be. This isn’t the end for me here. I’m going to keep coming back and improve my skills.”

Jackie

“I like how welcoming and encouraging the tutors are. They were able to help me with my dyslexia and push me to reach my goals. I always had a passion for learning and when I came to LVGH I met even more people like me and I felt like I was home.”

Joey

“Since I’ve improved my English skills I am more independent. I can go shopping, visit a doctor or fix an internet problem with a company over the phone, easily; that’s not a big deal for me anymore.”

Kelcillene

“Education helps you realize your potential, which allow you to empower yourself to do more than you thought you could do before.”

Winston

“After joining Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford (LVGH) I feel confident to go out with my children. It changed my life.”

#ThrowbackThursday because we sure do miss a full classroom!

For the safety of our students and tutors, all classes remain online for the time being. Starting next week, students may come in to the office to use our devices, internet, or just a quiet space to log on to their online class. Please call ahead if you'd like to come in so we can limit capacity. Thank you!

Foodshare’s food distribution at Rentschler Field will start back up again on Tuesday, January 12.

Foodshare has been distributing food at Rentschler Field in East Hartford since the start of the pandemic. This distribution site alone has served over 225,000 households; many new to food insecurity due to COVID-19 and has distributed over 6 million meals.

“We successfully served hundreds of thousands of people with the Rentschler Field distribution during the spring, summer and fall, but winter weather in New England is always an incredible challenge. Our team worked tirelessly throughout the holidays to find a way to keep this distribution site going through the winter, and we are happy to report our efforts were successful. Thanks to the continued support of Governor Lamont and the State of Connecticut, and thanks to a generous discount from our friends at Euphoria Event Solutions in Windsor, we will be able to continue our Rentschler Field distribution through the winter months,” said Jason Jakubowski, President, and CEO of Foodshare.

WINTER SCHEDULE
TUESDAYS starting on January, 12; with an end date to be determined.

NEW WINTER HOURS:
9:30 am – 1:00 pm

Address: 615 Silver Lane, East Hartford, CT 06118 – Silver Lane entrance; gates will close at 1:00 pm

One allocation of food per car to ensure that we have enough food for everyone.

In the event of winter weather check Foodshare’s social media as well as NBC Connecticut and FOX61 for schedule updates.

This emergency distribution at Rentschler Field is in addition to Foodshare’s ongoing efforts to provide food to a network of over 260 pantries, community kitchens, and Mobile Foodshare sites throughout the region.

Community members can access additional food resources through the following:
