How to Volunteer

Join us for meaningful volunteer opportunities in a diverse learning community. Choose from a range of volunteer opportunities: one-day team events; computer lab support; or a weekly commitment as a classroom tutor.

Currently, our biggest need is for classroom tutors. You do not need to be a teacher or speak another language to become a classroom tutor. Our tutor training series will teach you how to develop student-centered lesson plans, locate educational resources, and feel confident in the classroom. Here are the steps you’ll take to become a classroom tutor:

  • visit LVGH’s Hartford Literacy Center for a welcome meeting with a staff member

  • observe two classes (usually the same day as your welcome meeting)

  • participate in a three-session Tutor Training Series at our Hartford Literacy Center

  • engage in a two-part student teaching experience

Once all training requirements are fulfilled, tutors typically begin teaching at the start of the next term.

Volunteer Opportunities for Groups

We also welcome corporate and community groups for short-term or day-long projects. These opportunities vary depending on your group’s availability and schedule, the time of year, and the current needs of our community.  For more information, please contact our Development Officer Diane Klingman or call: 860-233-3853.
