Our Mission

Changing Lives Through Literacy

Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford welcomes adult learners seeking to change their lives through literacy. The mission of LVGH is to create a community of fully literate adults through student-centered instruction that catalyzes career readiness and advancement.

Why Adult Literacy?

19% of adults living in Greater Hartford read at or below a second-grade level. These adults lack the basic literacy skills they need to find sustainable employment, advocate for their health and wellness, and support their children’s language development and school success.

We offer small, student-centered classes in basic literacy, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), high school completion, citizenship, digital learning, and job readiness skills. An accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide, we serve twenty towns in Greater Hartford.  We rely on public and private support to expand our reach and meet the vast need for literacy services.
